Every year, the Energy Network News recognizes emerging leaders and their efforts to build a clean energy economy.

This year, SEIA’s own Nakhia Morrissette was named to their 40 Under 40 List, recognizing her accomplishments and outstanding contributions to the solar industry.

At SEIA, Nakhia manages the Midwest policy portfolio and has been an ardent advocate for solar in state capitals across the region. Since joining SEIA in January 2019, Nakhia has dedicated her time to policy battles in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana and Illinois, among others.

Nakhia is the spokesperson for the Path to 100 Coalition of Illinois, which is working to remove the market barriers preventing the state from reaching its 100% renewable energy target by 2050. To achieve this goal, the state will need to solve urgent funding issues that are endemic to its existing renewable energy policy and sending mixed signals to solar, storage, and wind developers that are ready to meet these demands. To get Illinois on a sustainable path to meet these goals, the coalition is calling for the state to achieve 40% renewable energy by 2030 as an interim goal and recently voiced support for Governor Pritzker’s principles for energy reform.

In addition to her work at SEIA, Nakhia serves as Vice President of the Board of Directors at The Black Women Lawyers’ Association of Greater Chicago, and was selected to be a 2020 Fellow of the Chicago Urban League, an intensive nine-month program for African American professionals designed to advance their careers while building a more diverse pipeline of leaders across Chicago.

Congratulations Nakhia!

900,000 Opportunities to Advance Equity in the Clean Energy Economy

President Biden is right: When you think of climate action, you should think jobs. In order to fully decarbonize our electric grid by 2035, the solar workforce must reach 900,000 Americans. This is an historic opportunity, but we must take steps to ensure that workforce reflects the diversity of our country and allow the rising tide of the solar industry to lift all boats.
